When my friend and Worship Pastor at church mentioned that he was starting a new band recently, I jumped at the opportunity to do some fun and cool promotional photos for their website, Facebook page and new CD. The band is called Forlorn Hope and they sing about bringing justice to the oppressed. We talked about the concept for the album and images and set about location scouting, settling on a back ally in Rosenberg, TX. I brought in my friend Brian Wagner to help out with the shoot because he’s got a great eye, especially when it comes to band and music photography. I think everyone was pretty happy with the results. The guys in the band are John Cordes, Adam Arnold, Chuck Arnold and Mark Ferow.

These are really just a sampling of lots of different poses and finishes.

And finally, there was one really hilarious outtake, when John’s wife called to ask him to pick something up at the store on the way home.

Holiday Family Portraits: Katy, TX Photographer

With the holidays nearly upon us, many are wanting the perfect family portrait to use on their annual Christmas or Hanukkah cards. The weather in Katy, TX this time of year is generally perfect for beautiful outdoor location photosessions. Saturday afternoon two weeks ago was no exception.

Capturing this family for the second year in a row was a treat. It’s great when I start to build a relationship with my clients and can easily remember their children’s names. I remarked to the mom what a difference a year made in the ability of their kids (especially the youngest) to actually follow some direction and have patience with me and my camera. Their little girl positively radiated in front of my lens.

So all those factors combined with spectacular evening light and scenery made for even better results in their family photos than last year. See for yourself.

Bluebonnet season 2010 has come and gone, and now we just have some beautiful photographs to remember it by. These twin little girls were just precious in their matching red outfits, surrounded by vivid blue, red and yellow wildflowers at Old Baylor Park in Independence, TX. It’s amazing that twins could look like night and day from each other, and their mama tells me their personalities are totally unique as well.

I absolutely adore photographing newborn babies, so why not double the pleasure? For quite awhile I had been searching for a mama pregnant with twins willing to work with me. Multiples are so rare and precious, being chosen to capture their first days in this world is nothing short of a privilege. The surprising thing about my first twin newborn shoot? It took place in Alexandria, Virginia. It just so happened that I was traveling there for business in April, and a loyal reader of my husbands’ college football blog, Black Shoe Diaries, had mentioned his wife was due with twins. I knew they lived in Alexandria so I contacted him about doing a photoshoot and finally fulfilled my dream.

The boys were five weeks old but had been several weeks premature, so they were still tiny and sleepy. I brought my friend, Alexis, along as an assistant and baby wrangler, something at which I knew she was highly skilled. Since it takes quite awhile to get two newborns asleep naked and I had a flight to catch, I didn’t get as many unique poses as I would have liked, but I’m still thrilled with the results. N and A were simply precious, and their parents exceptionally hospitable. Thanks, Meg, for the fantastic french toast!

it’s bluebonnet time in texas!

Bluebonnet photos are a Texas tradition that every family should do at least once, if not annually. Last spring was our first wildflower season living in the lonestar state, so I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect when I went bluebonnet hunting with my boys. We were blown away by the beauty we found driving up highway 36 to Brenham and back down 290 through Chappell Hill. I didn’t stray far off the path, but I found the perfect spot for my photos and determined that I would help other parents capture the sweetness this year.

Right now we tentatively have two dates scheduled for your convenience, one weekday and one weekend day. Saturday March 27th and Wednesday March 31st I will spend the whole morning and early afternoon in Brenham meeting beautiful families among the bluebonnets. Since we are not moving around much a full two hour session is not necessary, so I’m offering 30 minute mini-sessions for only $99. This includes five full resolution digital negatives with a print release, normally a $50 value, or if you choose to order professional lab quality prints from me (not a consumer lab, much higher quality) I will include 5 8×10 prints. You will get to see a gallery with more than just those five shots, all fully edited, and additional prints or files are ala carte.

Last year I chose to have one of my bluebonnet shots of my boys printed on gallery wrapped canvas and it hangs beautifully in my living room. It is the one thing in my house that consistantly gets compliments from everyone who visits. My hope is that I can help you capture the joy of creating a memory like that with your children.

home for the holidays

Last summer I got a call from someone referred by my friend Kristi, whose maternity and newborn shots I did. Tara was well into what would be her last pregnancy and wanted to capture that special time on film. Her family had recently relocated to Mumbai, India for her husband’s job but she came home in her third trimester to have the baby. Well on the day of her scheduled maternity shoot, she ended up heading to the hospital instead and had baby Ryan! At least I got to do his sweet sweet newborn photos. A short few weeks later the whole family was back to India until Christmas.

Fast forward several months and Tara booked a full family portrait session, just two days after the 24 hour flight back to Houston to spend the holidays here. Twelve hours of time difference made for two extremely jet-lagged kiddos! But the setting sun gave us gorgeous light for some beautiful photos with the Weatherwax family. one good family

It was a brisk fall morning when I met this fellow Moxie Mom’s family at a local Katy park. They recently built their dream home out in Sealy, TX, which Carrie assures me is not really that far away from the conveniences of Katy. Her two little blondies loved visiting with the ducks, but eventually we spontaneously decided to move to another nearby park for a few more shots. I’m so glad we did, the old white houses and porch swing were a perfect setting for these family portraits.

My friend Sara is not new to motherhood or pregnancy, but she wears it well. The love she has for her family and her saviour are visibly evident, and she definitely had that maternal glow during this third pregnancy. I was thrilled to be able to capture that glow during the last few days before baby Toben arrived…she certainly didn’t look ready to give birth any day! These were shot on a Friday morning and she predicted he would arrive by Wednesday the following week…and Wednesday it was. I really think that women are most beautiful when they are expecting, even if they don’t feel it.

love is in the house

Portrait photography is a lot of fun, but I also enjoy doing some event photography from time to time. Back in May I met a lovely woman at one event I was capturing who asked for my card and later called to hire me for her own event. Her husband was a pastor at a local church called Lively Hope Missionary Baptist church in nearby Simonton. They were hosting a dinner at the Weston Lakes Country Club in Fulshear in honor of their senior minister who had undergone some major health trials recently and faithfully perservered, shepherding his flock and blessing the Lord all the while. I don’t know the details, but as I understood it, he faced death and God the physician healed him. The evening started out as a normal banquet would, as a calm pleasant evening, but ended up in a spirited, worshipful party of prayer and praise. It was a blessing to me as a witness.

It was also a challenge to photograph, as it took place indoors at night, requiring flash. Ask any experienced photographer and they will tell you that African-american skin and all it’s many tones is difficult to capture correctly. I asked the Lord for help and did my best, and here’s a little video of the resulting images. Click on the photo to see the video.

celebrating one year

First babies get all the photos, right? Not necessarily. I was thrilled with a fellow Moxie Mom of Katy asked me to photograph her younger child, by herself, to celebrate her first birthday. This fiery redhead was already toddling all over the place and loved to ham it up for the camera. She has “star” written all over her. Mom told me she also appreciated some of the more serious, monochrome types of portraits, so the challenge was not getting little C to smile, it was capturing her NOT smiling. She was truly a happy little girl. Enjoy!
